Three Safe-Driving Habits To Adopt When You Need A Windshield Replacement

by Andrew Jackson

When you have a chip in your windshield that grows into a crack, you've typically reached the point at which an auto glass shop can no longer repair the damage and now has to replace the glass. This procedure is quick and you can typically wait at the shop while the work is completed. It's important to avoid putting off your trip to the auto glass shop. The longer you drive with a cracked windshield, the more risk you have of the crack getting bigger and making it difficult to safely see through the glass. You might also find yourself being stopped and getting a ticket if the crack has expanded to the degree that visibility is an issue. These three driving habits can help you avoid the crack spreading before your appointment and before windshield replacement is needed.

Be Careful With Your A/C And Heater

One of the common reasons for a windshield crack to greatly expand is through a dramatic change in temperature brought about through use of the vehicle's air conditioner or heater. The worst thing you can do is get into a cold or hot car and blast the heater or A/C right away. Instead, set the heater so the dashboard vents are closed and the floor vents are open. This will allow the heat to slowly rise in your vehicle, which is easier on the windshield. When it's hot outside, lower your windows to help cool the interior of the car and use the A/C sparingly.

Don't Follow Other Vehicles Closely

Following closely behind other vehicles can increase your risk of being in an accident, but there's also a greater likelihood of another rock bouncing off your windshield and creating a vibration that makes the crack grow. Safely lower your speed, when necessary, to avoid traveling directly behind other motorists. Be especially vigilant about avoiding trucks. Because they have more tires than cars, there's more of a likelihood of one of the tires catching a rock and firing it through the air.

Steer Clear Of Rough Roads

Roads that bounce your car around and create significant vibrations can further damage the crack in your windshield. If you're traveling on a road with potholes, do your best to find a detour to your destination or, at the very least, be careful to avoid hitting any potholes. Roads with uneven pavement, such as those around where road crews are working, are also best to avoid if you're able.

About Me

The Benefits of Mobile Windshield Repair

A few months ago, I was driving home from work when a rock got kicked up from a vehicle in front of me and smashed into my windshield. It was frustrating, but I knew that there had to be an easy way to get my auto glass fixed. I started looking around, and I found a great mobile windshield repair place that was willing to do the repair. They came out to my work and fixed my windshield in the parking lot. It saved me a boatload of time, and I was really grateful for their efforts. This website is all about keeping your auto glass pristine by fixing problems as they come.
